The pedestrian-friendly Town of Miami Lakes FL homes offer residents a scenic, peaceful quality of life in northern Miami-Dade County. With a live/work urban feel and an abundance of lovely lakes and parks, the neighborhoods of real estate in Miami Lakes are well planned and beautiful.
Constructed on a 50-year timetable by Sengra and Graham Companies, Miami Lakes real estate is divided into the original Miami Lakes development begun east of the Palmetto Expressway and newer development on the west side.
The Graham family has owned a large part of the real estate in the community for decades. They operated a dairy farm. In 1962, State Senator Ernest ‘Cap” Graham sold the land to developers for a master-planned community as well as a city that would be built over three decades. Careful planning and development of the original 3,000 acres resulted in a vibrant home town.
Former U.S. Senator Bob Graham, stepbrother of family patriarch William “Bill” Graham, is one of the owners. Katharine Graham of the Washington Post Newspaper had a share by marriage. A significant portion of the town is still owned by the Grahams including apartment buildings, shopping centers, office buildings, and undeveloped land.
In 1962 Lester Collins designed the original Miami Lakes with curving roadways lined with shade trees and irregular shaped lakes, a contrast to other sections that have been laid out on a grid with rectangular lakes. The original master-planned community has neighborhood lakes, shopping areas, and tot-lot parks.
Over the years, the area has received a substantial amount of immigrant growth. After citizens voted to incorporate in 2000, both sections are now included in the Town of Miami Lakes. Main Street is the centerpiece of the community of less than 30,000 residents and over 1,700 businesses. It is the 31st municipality in Miami-Dade County. Since incorporation, it operates under a Council-Manager form of government, combining strong leadership of elected officials with managerial experience of an appointed Town Manager. The Mayor and Council are elected to represent the citizens and to develop policy. All citizens are encouraged to attend monthly Town Hall meetings.
